Curriculum for Wales

Our Curriculum Statement

At Abbey Primary, we believe in the power of collaboration. Our curriculum has been developed through the collective input of senior leaders, staff, Governors, pupils, parents, carers, and the wider community. This collaborative approach has enabled us to create a curriculum that reflects our shared vision and ensures all children at Abbey Primary receive an education that will set them up for success in life.

Our curriculum intent is rooted in the aspiration to give all pupils the knowledge, skills, and experiences they need to thrive in an increasingly complex and dynamic world. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum that integrates different areas of learning, encouraging pupils to make connections across subjects and apply their knowledge creatively. We aim to develop independent, ambitious learners who are equipped with the tools to think critically, solve problems, and take ownership of their learning.

Our curriculum also places a strong emphasis on the sense of belonging. We help our pupils understand their place within the school community, the local area, Wales, and the wider world. We recognise the importance of cultural, historical, and social contexts in shaping our learners’ identities and encourage them to reflect on their roles as ethical, informed citizens in a global society.

Assessment plays a crucial role in our approach, identifying individual strengths, achievements, and areas for development. We believe assessment should be supportive, helping learners make progress at a pace that is appropriate for them, while offering the right level of challenge. Through regular feedback and reflection, we help pupils track their own progress and strive for continuous improvement.

At Abbey Primary, we understand the importance of developing a shared understanding of progression. We track progress carefully, using observations, discussions, and planned activities to ensure pupils develop their skills and knowledge in a meaningful way. We are committed to fostering confidence, curiosity, and a desire for growth, ensuring pupils move through their learning journey with increasing independence, critical thinking, and the ability to transfer learning to new and complex situations.

Our curriculum is constantly evolving, informed by the ongoing feedback and insights of our learners, staff, and the wider community. This ensures that Abbey Primary’s curriculum remains relevant, responsive, and truly reflective of the needs of our pupils.
